Why Is Civitai So Hard to Understand? An Honest Beginner's Perspective

When I first discovered Civitai, I was beyond excited. A whole platform built around sharing, exploring, and expanding the world of AI art and models? Sign me up. But after just a few hours of clicking around, I found myself more confused than inspired.
This article isn’t meant to throw shade at the amazing community or developers behind Civitai — quite the opposite. I think it’s an incredible project. But I also think it’s fair to say: Civitai is not the easiest place to figure out as a new user.
Let me walk you through a few of the struggles I had (and still have), and maybe you’ll recognize them — or better yet, share how you solved them.
1. What is a “Model,” really?
You’d think that uploading a model means you’re sharing a piece of AI-generated content. But on Civitai, a “model” typically refers to a LoRA, checkpoint, or embedding — something that someone else can use to create images.
But what if you just want to show off the images you’ve made? That’s not a model — it’s a post. Took me hours to realize that. 🫠
2. Posts, Models, Images, Articles, Videos… huh?
The navigation bar is filled with content types, but without any explanation. Should I post in the “Posts” tab or write an “Article”? Should my images go under “Images” or inside a Model page?
I ended up uploading the same image in three different places just to see what would happen. Honestly, it felt like trying to solve a puzzle without knowing what the finished picture looks like.
3. Mature Content Settings Are a Mystery
This one really threw me off. I uploaded a creative piece that wasn’t explicit by any normal standard, but it got instantly hidden behind a mature content warning. Why?
Turns out, Civitai auto-flags certain tags or visual features, and unless both you and your viewers have mature content enabled in their settings, the images are blurred out.
Even worse — there’s no clear message to me as the creator explaining why it happened. I had to Google and read Reddit threads to figure it out.
4. Where’s the Help Button?
This is a small detail with a big impact. A lot of sites include little "?" icons or beginner walkthroughs. But Civitai throws you straight into the deep end.
Yes, there’s a Wiki — but it feels buried and often assumes a certain level of AI/model knowledge. What I wanted was a clear “Start Here” tutorial with links like:
How to upload your first image
How content filters work
What counts as NSFW
How to organize your creations
Wouldn’t that make everything so much easier?
5. The Community is Helpful… If You Find It
To be fair, once I found the Discord and started commenting on other posts, I realized the community is awesome. But it’s not obvious where to go to ask beginner questions, and there’s no “Getting Started” forum or tag that helps new users connect.
Final Thoughts
I love Civitai. I plan to keep sharing here. But I also think we need to talk honestly about the user experience for beginners.
If you’ve ever felt lost trying to figure out how this site works — you’re not alone. And if you’re a veteran user reading this: maybe you could share some tips for those of us still learning.
Let’s make Civitai better together — not just with amazing art and models, but by helping each other feel welcome and supported from the start.
