MISTAKE

Wow. Good reaction. I guess I'll do more of them.
MISTAKE -
The silence of the ice is a living thing. It has a weight. It presses on you. Under it, the water is a black, sleeping throat. My line is a question I ask of the dark.
For a time I cannot measure, I have asked this question. The sun is a smear of milk in the grey. It gives me no heat. Only a kind of direction. The fish that answer are silver jolts of life, a brief, frantic warmth against the cold. They become bread. They become gloves. They become another day of the same question.
Today, the dark does not answer. The hole freezes over. A skin of ice heals the wound I made.
It's time.
The path to the hut is a line I have carved into the world with my own walking. The snow knows my weight. The wind knows my shape. The hut waits. It is not my shelter. It is a door, given to the people of Colkirk by their own fealty sworn to their lord. Dark metal, humming with a power I don't understand. A promise of elsewhere.
I step into the circle. The hum climbs into the bones of my skull.
The world dissolves. A controlled fall. A brief unbeing.
There is a tearing sound. Not in the air. In me. The shimmer of transit turns a violent, bilious green. The machine groans. A memory surfaces, hot and sharp: The man in the coat again, his finger on that screen of light. The numbers spin loose from their moorings.
Mistake.
The word is a physical blow to me.
Mistake.
And then, impact.
I am on my knees. Not on snow, but on a grid of iron that vibrates with the thunder of a thousand machines. The air is thick, hot, tasting of ozone and scorched metal. It is the breath of a furnace.
I look up, and the world is gone.
There is no sky. There is only the endless, silent, horrifying beauty of the Ring. A river of shattered worlds and ice, flowing through a blackness so complete it feels like an absence of any God. It stretches to infinity, a ribbon of pale, ghostly light. This place is not a planet. It is a graveyard, and the gravestones are floating mountains. Roji.
And yet, I am held here. Gravity, warm and constant. Air I can breathe. A miracle, a curse.
The noise is a physical assault. A roar of industry, of life, of a million souls crammed into a city carved from a rock adrift in the void. A torrent of chrome and flesh flows past me. Faces with glowing eyes, armored ones- the ones from Olympus, voices that are a cascade of clicks and static. They are the children of this floating womb.
My hand finds my pack. An old instinct. Beneath the worn canvas is a cold, heavy shape wrapped in cloth. A tool without a purpose. A weapon without a spark. A hunger awakens in me, sudden and absolute. It is not for food. It is a command, burned into my broken code.
Battery.
The word is a compass point. The reason I am here.
I have nothing. The fish, the snow, the pale sun. All of it is lightyears away, a dream I am waking from. The crowd surges around me, a hundred different faces, and not one of them sees the ghost kneeling on their floor. A fragment. A Vagrant from a dead world, staring at their river of stars.
My knees are an anchor, pinning me to the vibrating deck. A ghost has no place kneeling. A ghost should move. I get up. The motion is slow, a column of mercury rising. The weight of this place is a physical pressure, a hand on my chest.
I find a recess. A wound in the steel wall between two stalls overflowing with mechanical viscera. Here, the current of bodies cannot reach me. Here, I can pretend to breathe.
From the shadows, I watch the city’s heart beat.
It is a rhythm of exchange. A four armed creature trades shimmering stones for water. A man with a jaw of pitted iron buys noodles with a single, perfect gear. Value is a language I do not speak. Everyone has something to offer. A function. A purpose.
My hand tightens on the canvas of my pack. Inside, relics. A fishing line, a hook of bone, a knife of chipped stone. Tools for a silent world. Here, they are fossils. They are memories of a life that may never have been mine at all.
The hunger is a low burn, a pilot light in my gut. It is not mine. It is a directive from the broken code that calls itself me. The cold weight in my pack needs a heart. A spark. The question of why is a bubble that bursts before it can reach the surface. The need is the only truth.
My gaze locks onto a stall across the walkway. It bleeds light from a single, naked bulb. Piled on its counter are the hearts. Batteries. Dense bricks of stored power. The merchant is a study in mismatched parts, one hand flesh, the other a thing of chrome and wires, drumming a silent, restless rhythm on the countertop.
The ghost in me whispers. Take one. A sliver of ice in the furnace heat. A quick movement. Disappear into the stream. I am fast. I have spent a lifetime running from things I cannot see.
But the body does not obey. The memory of the man in the clean coat holds it fast. A beautiful mistake. A mistake that leads home. There is no home for the dead. I am not smart. But I have survived this long. Survival is a form of intelligence. To survive here, I cannot be a thief. I must be a trader. I must have a reason to be seen.
I need something to trade.
I pull the pack from my shoulders. The ties are stiff under fingers that remember a cold that no longer exists. I draw the knife. The blade is river stone, grey and imperfect. The handle is bone. It is a tool of silence and snow. It is a piece of a world that is now only a memory.
It is all I have.
I hold it so the light from the naked bulb catches its flawed edge.
I take a breath that tastes of fire and recycled lives. I step out of the shadows.
