Why Do Humans Squander Their Lives?

One hundred and twenty-one years ago, an elderly writer and his two young disciples sat debating literature far into the night.

From atop the chest of drawers, their cat listened to this lofty discourse and wondered:

“Why are humans so content to squander their lives in idleness?”

His own concerns, of course, were far more consequential: tomorrow’s meal—and his next rendezvous with the lady cat.
