How I trained an H3 style LoRA from 61 stills: y2kdigicam

Remember the little silver camera from 2005? Harsh flash, red-eye, the orange date stamp in the corner, skies that just turned white. I wanted that look in moving pictures, so I trained y2kdigicam for MiniMax H3. Here is what worked, what I threw out, and how to get the most out of it.

    Why stills, not clips

The strongest H3 style LoRAs I studied were trained on still images. Training on short clips without sound can weaken H3's native audio, and one of the other entries ran into exactly that. Stills keep the look, and H3 still brings the motion and the sound.

The dataset: 61 images, every subject only once

    • About half people (mixed ages and backgrounds), a quarter places, a quarter things, food and animals.

    • Light mix: roughly half harsh on-camera flash at night or indoors, a third bright daylight, the rest mixed light like neon or dusk.

    • Cropped to 4:3, like a real compact camera.

    • An orange date stamp on about a third of the images, so it stays optional.

What I removed: images where the model had written fake text into signs, near-duplicates, and anything that could read as a minor.

    Captions

Every caption follows the same pattern:

    y2kdigicam, <what is in the picture>, <flash / daylight / mixed light>, [date stamp]

I did not describe red-eye, noise or purple fringing. Those are the style, and the trigger word should learn them. Light and date stamp are described on purpose, so you can switch them on and off in your prompt.

    Training

On-site trainer, MiniMax H3, style type, 10 epochs, rank 32, learning rate 1e-4. I picked epoch 8: the style is clearly there from epoch 4 on, and epoch 8 was the latest one where both sample clips came out clean.

    How to prompt it

    • Start with y2kdigicam.

    • Name the light: harsh on-camera flash for parties and night, daylight for beach and street, mixed light for neon.

    • Add date stamp if you want the timestamp.

    • Describe the camera behaviour: handheld point and shoot, small jittery moves, someone pressing the shutter.

    • Give the sound a line: camera beep, shutter click, muffled party music.

    • Strength 0.8 is the default. Turbo works and keeps it cheap.

    Try it
