    Hi-Res VS Scaling

    Short rant this time.

I have noticed that a lot of images hover around 1 megapixel here in CivitAI. I have published many images that far exceed that, though I have asked myself if it's worth it, especially considering that users browsing images may not even look specifically at each image, if their browsing style is more like a scrolling feed. Even when looking at one image, the image is rescaled to fit the screen, and to actually be able to take a closer look I've had to open it in another tab. Browsing CivitAI on mobile makes things a bit worse still, as pinch-zoom doesn't work.

Hi-res images also have a bandwidth issue. A lot of people upload their PNGs, sometimes including huge workflows. PNGs are already much bigger than their WEBP and JPEG counterparts, sometimes to a factor of 10. This probably has a much worse effect on people who don't have great connections, and as such this site is very much not friendly to slow connections. One thing that could be done is converting the original PNGs to another format, maybe extracting the workflow and allowing users to download just the workflow, or maybe just giving them an option to download the original PNG, but without having to download it every time.

    What do you think?

    Cheers.
