Landsknechte were German-speaking mercenary infantry formed in the late 15th century under Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, whose pike-and-shot tactics and swaggering presence made them a defining force on early 16th-century battlefields . Their outfit became instantly recognizable: richly colored, slashed doublets whose bright underlayers burst through deliberate cuts, paired with puffed Pluderhosen, berets, or wide-brimmed hats .
