Probably an important part in 50-70's stuff, is a lot of the clothing will be flat (not a lot of texturing or color), and rarely reflective; Very much simpler is better.
Even later with TNG the uniforms were flat 2 colors sewn together to make patterns.
Given that the TV outputs of the time would be quite blurry, between noisy analogue jack connections and 480i (PAL/NTSC) radio transmissions, the clothing had to be quite deliberate and clear-cut to not be "a mush" if it was anything outside of the immediately recognizable "normal clothes".
