Total production: Approximately 15,000 units. The Panzer IV boasts the highest production volume of any German tank. This Ausf. D is an early model equipped with a 24-caliber 75mm gun.

(By comparison, the American M4 Sherman produced about 50,000 units!)

Since the start of the war, it was used extensively as the main German tank, but it soon found itself in a difficult position as it faced tough opponents in Russia, such as the T34 and KV1, and in North Africa, the M4.
