    日本のテレビ時代劇全盛の頃は毎週なにかしらの番組でお目にかかれた虚無僧ですが、最近はとんと見かけなくなってしまいました。

    虚無僧に扮した敵忍者集団が尺八を吹きながら石段を降りてきて、主役の柳生十兵衛や黄門様御一行に切りかかってくる、そんな役どころでした。

    本来はれっきとしたお坊さんで、中国唐代の普化(ふけ)禅師を祖とする普化宗の僧侶のことで、普化僧ともいいます。

    着物の上から袈裟を着け、首から「偈箱」と書かれた偈箱なりズタ袋を下げ、「天蓋」と呼ばれる籠みたいな編笠を被り、

    僧でありながら剃髪はせず、さらに徳川家康から帯刀も認可され、還俗するのも比較的容易、と一風変わったお坊さんなのでした。
