Joan Jett, born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958, in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, is an American rock singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actress. She is celebrated for her pioneering contributions to rock music and her role in breaking gender barriers in the industry.

Early Career and The Runaways

At 16, Jett co-founded the all-female rock band The Runaways in 1975. The band gained international attention with songs like "Cherry Bomb," challenging the male-dominated rock scene of the 1970s. Despite their global success, especially in Japan, The Runaways disbanded in 1979.

Solo Career and The Blackhearts

After The Runaways, Jett pursued a solo career. Facing initial rejections from multiple record labels, she and producer Kenny Laguna established Blackheart Records in 1980, making Jett one of the first women to own an independent record label. She formed Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, achieving major success with their rendition of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven consecutive weeks in 1982. Other notable hits include "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover," and "I Hate Myself for Loving You."
