What is Captain N: The Game Master?
The show follows Kevin Keene as he teams up with Nintendo characters to fight against villains and protect Videoland. The series was essentially a Nintendo crossover adventure, featuring iconic game characters from franchises like Mega Man, Metroid, Castlevania, Kid Icarus, and The Legend of Zelda.
Notable Characters in Captain N’s Team:Princess Lana – The ruler of Videoland and Kevin’s love interest
Mega Man – A small, green version of the Capcom hero (Mega Man), who had a raspy voice and said “mega” a lot
Simon Belmont – A vain and comedic version of the Castlevania hero
Kid Icarus (Pit) – A small, bow-wielding angel who added “-icus” to his words
Mother Brain (Metroid) – The main villain, portrayed as a giant, talking brain in a jar with a sassy, over-the-top personality
King Hippo (Punch-Out!!) & Eggplant Wizard (Kid Icarus) – Comic relief henchmen
Dr. Wily (Mega Man) – A secondary villain
Legacy and Cultural Impact
Captain N: The Game Master is a cult classic among retro gamers, though it’s known for taking creative liberties with Nintendo characters (Mega Man is green, Simon Belmont is arrogant, etc.).
Despite its dated animation and cheesy dialogue, it remains nostalgic for 80s/90s kids.
The concept of a gamer transported into a video game world influenced later series like ReBoot and Ready Player One.
