I've been pretty much using the default settings in the colab they provide. I changed the training parameters so that the resolution is 768 instead of 512 and changed the network_dim and network_alpha to match the table (32/16) in the guide.
The biggest thing for me has been the input and the output. You want to make sure you're using high-quality images. I'm not sure how much it affects the end result but I tag the images using Blip and Anime tags. Blip tags are like "a man sitting on a couch" and Anime tags are like "1boy, sitting, couch".
I also break out the images into different categories. I use closeup shots, medium shots, medium-full shots (also called cowboy shots), standing shots, and sitting or laying down shots. I also clean up the backgrounds and remove any watermarks. The dataset preparation is probably the longest part of the whole thing.
Still figuring out how to choose the best epoch that's outputted. That seems more art than science. I think I'm improving on that end though.
Hopefully all of the above helps and a Desperate Housewives-era Shawn Pyform is an excellent idea!
