Early Life and Education
Jon Bernthal was born on September 20, 1976, in Washington, D.C., into a Jewish family. His parents are Joan Lurie (née Marx) and Eric Lawrence "Rick" Bernthal, a former lawyer and chair of the board of directors for The Humane Society of the United States. His paternal grandfather was musician and producer Murray Bernthal. Jon has two brothers: Nicholas, an orthopedic surgeon and professor at UCLA, and Thomas, a consulting agency CEO married to former Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. His cousin was rock musician Adam Schlesinger.
Growing up in Cabin John, Maryland, Jon attended the Sidwell Friends School, graduating in 1995. He often described himself as a "troublemaker" during his youth. After high school, he studied at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, but left before completing his degree. On the advice of his acting teacher, Alma Becker, he joined the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia. During his time there, he also played catcher for a Russian professional baseball team.
Acting Career
Jon's acting journey began in the early 2000s with performances in over thirty regional and Off-Broadway plays, many with his own theater company, Fovea Floods. He also made guest appearances in television series such as "Boston Legal," "CSI: Miami," and "How I Met Your Mother."
His breakthrough role came in 2010 when he portrayed Shane Walsh on AMC's horror drama series "The Walking Dead." He was a main cast member for the first two seasons and returned for a guest appearance in 2018.
Jon gained further recognition as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He debuted this role in the second season of "Daredevil" in 2016 and continued as the lead in the spin-off series "The Punisher" from 2017 to 2019. He is set to reprise this role in the upcoming Disney+ series "Daredevil: Born Again."
In film, Jon has showcased his versatility with roles in "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013), "Fury" (2014), "Sicario" (2015), "The Accountant" (2016), "Baby Driver" (2017), "Wind River" (2017), "Widows" (2018), "Ford v Ferrari" (2019), and "King Richard" (2021).
Personal Life
In September 2010, Jon married Erin Angle, a trauma nurse and niece of retired professional wrestler Kurt Angle. The couple has three children: sons Henry (born August 2011) and Billy (born January 2013), and daughter Adeline (born February 2015). They reside in Ojai, California, which Jon describes as a "haven of peace."
Jon is an advocate for pit bull ownership and serves as a spokesperson for the Animal Farm Foundation, promoting the equal treatment of pit bulls. He owns three pit bulls who often accompany him to set; two of them, Boss and Venice, appeared in his 2012 film "Rampart."

In 2022, Jon launched a podcast titled "Real Ones," where he engages in candid conversations with a variety of guests about societal and everyday topics.
