The platypuses native to the tangled marshlands of the Fenmoor Basin dwell in burrows dug into muddy riverbanks and humus-rich hummocks. They hunt by night, slipping through murky channels, eyes closed as their bills sweep side to side, using electroreceptors to detect worms, larvae, and crustaceans buried in the muck. Their hind legs are equipped with venomous spurs. Even the smallest scratch can cause paralysis, fevered delirium, or a screaming, pain-filled death.

When Craniax the Quick and his allies began their slow march through Fenmoor’s wetlands, the platypuses did not take kindly to the interlopers. Scouts disappeared. Undead coteries never returned. Craniax found corpses. Well, in the case of the undead, he found corpses of corpses.

But the gnomes of Nimbledook, naturally, are undeterred. They call the platypuses “adorable murder otters” and watch them delightedly from the banks.

The platypuses allow this. For now.
