Description
The Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Calidris pygmaea) is a critically endangered small migratory shorebird. It breeds in the tundra of northeastern Russia and migrates to Southeast Asia for winter, stopping in coastal mudflats of countries like China, Thailand, and Myanmar. Its most distinctive feature is its short, black, spoon-shaped bill, which it uses to forage for small invertebrates in the mud. Due to habitat loss, its population has declined sharply, and it is now listed as Critically Endangered.
