Plate Armor as pop culture depicts it became widespread in Europe during the late middle ages. Meant to protect the wealthy owner from swords, spears and dampen blunt force trauma, the intricate build actually made it much more flexible than one would think. On foot or on horseback, the knights were at a significant advantage to the the poor that were unarmored and often fought with whatever tools they had on hand. In exchange for local power from the lord of the land, the knight was expected to go to battle when called upon, however most of their time was spent harassing the peasants and most time in the armor was spent jousting for show and sport.

The era of heavy armor declined as technology developed to counter it with penetrative force. Polearms and Crossbows could punch straight through the metal with focused impact, while blunt weapons like Maces and Hammers got bigger and focused on concussing the person inside the suit rather than breaking it. The introduction of firearms was the nail in the coffin as the plate did little to stop muskets, and it was significantly more effective to arm & train a large group of riflemen than to train and support a smaller group of knights.

While the era of Knights did not last, they're impact on popular culture, especially in the fantasy genre, thrives today. Old stories and fairy tales, such as King Arthur, Beowulf and other dragon slaying princess savers, continue to be retold and remade.

While mostly symbolic in title, Female Knights, or Dames, did exist. Most famous examples of Dames that saw combat include Joan of Arc and Gaita of Lombardy. Although these women wore male armor (mostly for protection from sexual assault), anime and fantasy today often portrays a more form fitting and exposing female variant.
