Frederick Douglass (1817 or 1818-1895) was the most photographed human being of the 19th century, which gives a hint to his impact on history. He was undoubtably the most influential Black American of the century, an advocate for his race from slavery through Reconstruction to Jim Crow.

He was a slave until escaping from the "peculiar institution" in 1838, around age 20. He immediately became a prominent spokesman for his enslaved brethren. It helped that he was obviously brilliant, making him a counterexample to those who argued, stupidly, that the enslaved were destined to such a state by their lesser intellect. He was an important advisor of every Republican president from Abraham Lincoln to Benjamin Harrison.
