According to Genesis, humanity was initially created with permanent childlike innocence and no sense of shame, and lived naked in the paradise of the Garden of Eden. After eating fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they gained understanding of their shame and were cast out from the garden, weaving clothes from fig leaves to cover themselves in the hostile outside world.

In the modern day, there is still shame around nudity, even in art (curse you payment processers), so artists got around this with convenient censorship, with falling leaves, plants and hair being used to cover up.
