The word "motanka" comes from the verb "motaty," meaning "to wind," as these dolls are created by wrapping and tying natural materials like fabric, thread, and herbs without using a needle or scissors.

Key features of a Motanka doll include:

• Faceless design: The doll is traditionally made without a face, often with a cross made of thread in its place, to prevent an evil spirit from entering it.

• Amulet function: Motankas were believed to protect homes and families from misfortune, with special dolls made for newborns, brides, and for healing illnesses.

• Symbolic roles: Besides being a protective charm, motankas symbolized female wisdom, family lineage, and continuity. They were often passed down from mother to daughter.

Today, the Motanka remains a cherished piece of Ukrainian heritage, valued for its rich history and cultural significance.
