The 540-HP Electric Ghost: Why the 2027 Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a €160,000 "Mini-Supercar"

In 2027, one of motoring's most revered icons is reborn not just as an homage, but as a "no holds barred technological experiment". The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is an all-electric, limited-production "mini-supercar" that resurrects the spirit of its 1980s rally-bred predecessors. Strictly limited to 1,980 numbered units—a nod to the original Turbo's 1980 launch year—this is a "halo car" designed to demonstrate the peak of Renault's passion and innovation.  

With deliveries beginning in 2027, the 3E is a ground-up performance machine developed by Renault's sports car division, Alpine. It is a purpose-built, rear-wheel-drive "electric weapon" with a price tag of approximately €155,000 to €160,000 and an engineering brief to be "a beast of a car built for rallying, drift and track performance, adapted for the road".  

Supercar Performance, Redefined

The heart of the Turbo 3E is its revolutionary powertrain. Instead of a single motor, it utilizes two advanced in-wheel electric motors, one in each of the rear wheels. This layout delivers a combined output of 540 hp (400 kW) , with some sources citing 555 hp , likely available via a steering-wheel-mounted "power boost" button.  

This architecture enables an astonishing 4,800 Nm (3,540 lb-ft) of torque delivered directly at the wheels. More importantly, it allows for "separate control of the two motors" , creating an active, software-defined differential that provides "optimal torque distribution" for unmatched agility.  

The results are definitive supercar metrics: acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes under 3.5 seconds, and the car will continue to a top speed of 270 km/h (167 mph).  

An 800-Volt, Alpine-Engineered Platform

This is not a modified version of the mass-market Renault 5. The Turbo 3E is built on a "tailor-made electric platform" , a bespoke aluminum chassis developed by Alpine engineers. The vehicle's superstructure is made of carbon fiber to ensure a combination of extreme lightness and rigidity.  

This aggressive weight-saving strategy results in an unladen weight of just 1,450 kg (3,197 lbs) —remarkably light for an EV with its capabilities. This gives the 3E an "exceptional power-to-weight ratio".  

The platform houses a 70 kWh battery , but its defining feature is its advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. This high-voltage system, typically found in top-tier EVs, is essential for managing thermal loads during "several hot laps" on a track and enables a maximum DC fast-charging speed of 350 kW. This allows the battery to charge from 15% to 80% in just 15 minutes. On a full charge, it targets a WLTP range of "over 400 km" (250 miles).  

A Collector's Item Built for Drifting

The "exuberant" design is a direct homage to its namesake, featuring "exaggerated bodywork" and "bulging rear fenders" that emulate the original's iconic air intakes.  

Inside, the strictly two-seater cabin confirms its purpose. It features customisable bucket seats with 6-point harnesses and, most notably, a prominent rally-style vertical handbrake. This, combined with "Race" and "drift-assist" modes , makes the 3E a "true rallying beast" engineered for "spectacular drift capabilities".  

Despite its aggressive nature, the car's public debut highlighted its modern paradox: "near-total silence," with only the sound of tire squeal betraying its performance.  

Reservations for the 1,980 examples opened in April 2025, requiring a €50,000 deposit , with the first allocation selling out quickly. The car will be sold in Europe (including the UK), the Middle East, Japan, and Australia. The 2027 Renault 5 Turbo 3E is the definitive "mini-supercar," a "pocket rocket" that successfully translates the raw, turbocharged spirit of the 1980s into a silent, brutally effective electric flagship.
