In the alternate reality designated Earth-295, known as the Age of Apocalypse, Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, better known as Magneto, emerges as a heroic figure rather than the antagonist seen in the primary Marvel timeline. First appearing in X-Men Alpha #1 (February 1995), this version of Magneto is profoundly shaped by the tragic death of his close friend Charles Xavier, killed accidentally by Xavier's time-traveling son Legion during an attempt to assassinate Magneto himself. This pivotal event, occurring decades earlier than in the main continuity, prevents the ideological rift between Magneto and Xavier, instead inspiring Magneto to embrace and champion Xavier's dream of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants in a world dominated by the tyrannical Apocalypse.

Devastated by Xavier's loss, Magneto adopts the name in honor of his fallen friend and establishes the X-Men as a resistance force against Apocalypse's regime, which has culled much of humanity and subjugated survivors. Recruiting mutants such as his children Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch—whom he discovers during travels in Europe—and forming a deep romantic bond with Rogue, whose absorbed powers grant her abilities akin to his own magnetism, Magneto builds a stronghold on Wundagore Mountain in Transia. There, he trains a dedicated team including members like Sabretooth, Blink, and Morph, fostering a sanctuary for mutants while waging guerrilla warfare against Apocalypse's Horsemen and Infinite forces, demonstrating strategic genius in genetics and engineering alongside his mastery of magnetism.

The culmination of Magneto's crusade unfolds during the final assault on Apocalypse's citadel in New York City, chronicled in X-Men Omega #1 (June 1995), where he confronts and ultimately defeats the ancient mutant by tearing him apart at the molecular level through precise manipulation of metallic elements within his body. Reuniting briefly with Rogue and their young son Charles—named after Xavier—Magneto faces the impending nuclear devastation launched by the Human High Council. Although the original timeline is restored through temporal intervention, elements of this reality persist in subsequent stories, with Magneto's heroic legacy influencing cross-dimensional narratives and underscoring his potential for redemption in the broader Marvel multiverse.
