Lain Iwakura is the quiet, deeply introverted protagonist of the 1998 anime Serial Experiments Lain. She starts as a shy, somewhat emotionless girl who keeps to herself, prefers childish things like bear pajamas and stuffed animals, and barely uses computers — describing herself as "not very good with them."

With her short, asymmetrical auburn hair (often secured by a simple hair clip), she appears unassuming and detached from the social world around her. As the story unfolds, Lain becomes drawn into "the Wired" (a surreal, internet-like network), where her true nature and multiple aspects of her identity begin to emerge in unsettling ways.
