Titania, whose real name is Mary MacPherran, first appeared in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #3 (July 1984), created by writer Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck. A native of Denver, Colorado, MacPherran grew up as a frail, undersized woman who endured constant bullying, leading her to fabricate stories of secret strength and adopt the nickname "Skeeter." Alongside her friend Marsha Rosenberg (later Volcana), she was transported to the artificial Battleworld by the Beyonder during the Secret Wars event. There, Doctor Doom granted her superhuman strength, durability, and stamina in exchange for loyalty, inspiring her to take the name Titania after the powerful queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, though she embraced a villainous path aligned with Doom's forces.
Upon returning to Earth after the Secret Wars, Titania established herself as a formidable supervillain, developing an intense personal rivalry with She-Hulk after suffering a humiliating defeat at her hands during their initial confrontation on Battleworld. This obsession drove much of her early criminal career, including memberships in groups such as the Masters of Evil and the Frightful Four. She formed a lasting romantic partnership with Carl "Crusher" Creel, the Absorbing Man, initially manipulating him for aid in seeking revenge against She-Hulk, but their relationship evolved into genuine affection, culminating in marriage and frequent teamwork in various schemes against heroes like the Avengers and Thor.
In later developments, Titania has oscillated between outright villainy and occasional attempts at reform, influenced by her deep-seated insecurities and desire for respect. Notable arcs include battles during events like Acts of Vengeance and Fear Itself, as well as periods of incarceration and reluctant alliances. More recent portrayals, particularly in Rainbow Rowell's She-Hulk series (2022 onward), explore her complexities, depicting efforts to leverage social media fame, confront personal vulnerabilities, and navigate a nuanced dynamic with She-Hulk, positioning Titania as a resilient antagonist with enduring ties to Marvel's street-level and cosmic threats.
