Cartoons back in day were made for theaters(disney and looney tunes shorts before movie starts). They were made for both kids and adults. Also look at movies like fantasia and gun use and violence and characters smoking cigars. Goofy's cartoons from 50s in particular were extrema(Nostalgia Critic did video on it) We even got to point during ww2 where for propaganda Donald Duck was turned in to a certain goose step party member.
