Autumnal Oxidation
We dressed like the end of something.
Black on black on beautiful black, layered against a world that mistook our mourning for costume. We weren't performing. We were the honest ones.
The venues, clubs, and dive bars smelled of clove smoke, self discovery, and unrequited fascination. The music, amplified as though played through a drowned cathedral was always slow, inevitable, cold at the bottom. Loud at the top. Sung of truths.
We danced.
We always danced.
I remember the way she looked in November light. The way lace catches darkness differently than skin. The way a corset is not only restraint but structural architecture;the body made deliberate. The fact that it made sacred in its own particular win and ruin.
We read things, tangible paper things. We felt things too large for Tuesday afternoons. We drank too much coffee. We dabbled in the occult. We loved with the specific gravity of people who understood that love was also a form of loss; that you could hold someone so completely they became a wound you chose to keep.
They called it a phase.
It was a cosmology.
And now I pass a shop window and catch my reflection, still wearing black, still carrying the weight of beautiful defeats and I think of everyone who found each other in that darkness. How we built something real from fishnet, vinyl, and the conviction that ugliness was the lie.
