    Gustave Doré — Dante's Divine Comedy | Inferno · Purgatorio · Paradiso | Engravings LoRA (Krea2 Turbo)

LoRA trained on Gustave Doré's monumental illustration cycle for Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy (1861–1868): 136 full-page plates — 75 for Inferno, 42 for Purgatorio, 19 for Paradiso — the single most influential visual interpretation of Dante ever created. The model captures Doré's sublime scale, vertiginous perspectives, tenebrist chiaroscuro, and the dense engraved line-work that made these plates the definitive image of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven for 160 years.

About the Artist & the Project

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor, born in Strasbourg. A child prodigy who was publishing lithographs at fifteen, he became the most celebrated book illustrator of the 19th century.

    • 1861 — published the Inferno volume with 75 engravings, financed at his own expense; an instant triumph across Europe

    • 1868 — completed the cycle with Purgatorio and Paradiso plates

    • Other monumental projects: the Bible (1866), Don Quixote, Paradise Lost, Rabelais, Perrault's Fairy Tales, London: A Pilgrimage, Crusades, Idylls of the King

    • Died in Paris in 1883, at the height of his fame

The Divine Comedy plates defined the popular imagination of Dante forever: the gate of Hell, Charon, Paolo and Francesca, the frozen lake of Cocytus, the three-faced Lucifer, the celestial rose — all seen through Doré's eyes.

    The Manner

    • Sublime scale: tiny human figures dwarfed by cosmic architecture — infinite circles, bottomless chasms, the mountain of Purgatory, the spheres of Heaven; the vertigo of the infinite in both directions

    • Tenebrist chiaroscuro: vast fields of darkness pierced by hellfire, divine radiance, or a single shaft of light; light always carries theological meaning

    • Vertiginous perspective: looking straight down into abysses or straight up into heavens; diagonals of descent and ascent structure every plate

    • Dense crowds: hundreds of souls, demons, angels rendered as rhythmic masses — Doré's crowds are oceans of bodies

    • Engraved line-work: fine parallel hatching and cross-hatching building tone from pure black to luminous white; the texture of 19th-century wood engraving (bois gravé)

    • Gothic-Romantic atmosphere: medieval architecture, ruined towers, the city of Dis, frozen lakes, burning sands — the Romantic sublime applied to theology

    • Monochrome palette: black ink on cream/ivory paper; occasional sepia or warm plate tone

    • Narrative precision: each plate illustrates a specific canto with legible iconography — Dante with laurel wreath, Virgil as robed guide, Charon's oar, Beatrice's veil
