Hello everyone! I hope you’re all doing great. This time I bring you Flesh Backbone from Shikabane Hime: Kuro (Corpse Princess: Kuro)! Flesh Backbone is an anime-original Shikabane Hime who serves as one of Kanechika Umehara’s contracted undead companions. Unlike the manga, where Umehara is partnered with Touma Sawamiya, Flesh Backbone was created specifically for the anime as Touma’s replacement. She was originally a foreigner who died in a plane accident while traveling to Japan, eventually becoming a Shikabane Hime. Her personality is one of her most distinctive traits: Flesh is an extremely energetic, outspoken, eccentric, and unabashed otaku who is obsessed with anime, Japanese pop culture, fictional characters, and merchandise. She shares Umehara’s otaku interests and the two frequently get into passionate arguments over subjects such as anime, two-dimensional characters, figurines, and doujinshi. Despite her loud, impulsive, and often ridiculous behavior, Flesh is fundamentally friendly and good-natured, making her an intentionally comedic contrast to the darker atmosphere surrounding the Shikabane Hime.

Flesh Backbone has a highly recognizable visual identity built around her extremely long blonde hair, bright blue eyes, freckles, red lipstick, and distinctive cat-eared headband. Her hair is usually arranged into enormous twin ponytails secured with pink ribbon bows, with additional ribbons decorating her hairstyle. Her design deliberately resembles an exaggerated fantasy-style Japanese costume filtered through an enthusiastic foreign otaku’s interpretation of Japan, combining kimono-inspired clothing with exposed midriff, short skirts, detached sleeves, colorful accessories, and exaggerated feminine proportions. Her outfits predominantly use pale lavender-pink, white, blue, purple, and red accents, while the cat-ear headpiece, twin-tail hairstyle, freckles, and oversized shuriken contribute to her instantly recognizable silhouette. As a Shikabane Hime, she is also a combatant and is associated with an oversized shuriken, reinforcing the intentionally over-the-top anime aesthetic of her character design.
