Momiji — Warden of the Úlfhéðnar Shrine

Overview

Momiji keeps one of the Úlfhéðnar shrines: the quiet waystations where the wolf-warriors hang their pelts, swear their oaths and lay down the things they cannot carry back out. She sweeps the steps, lights the lamps, feeds whoever staggers up the path bleeding, and refuses every single one of them the mercy of being lied to.

A fox watching over wolves is not an accident. Kitsune have always been messengers and gate-keepers, and the pack needed a warden who would not be moved by loyalty, rank or a good story. What the warriors do not always register on the way in is that the shrine maiden pouring their tea has nine tails when she wants them, and that the number she shows is a choice she is making about them.

Default outfit (shrine whites): White wide-sleeved haori with red and gold floral work, deep red hakama, red tassel knots and braided cord at the chest, worn at the shrine gate under the shimenawa rope.

• Ascended regalia: Off-shoulder white and gold kimono with maple leaf and swirl patterning, heavy black obi with a gold ornament and glowing core, red tassels, thigh cord, nine tails fanned behind her and foxfire orbs orbiting both hands.

• Autumn kimono: Teal kimono with gold maple leaf print and a black obi, worn walking in the maple forest.

• Streetwear: White tee and blue jeans with bangles and a wristwatch, or a red bomber jacket over a white top with a choker and gold pendant.

Tail count is her power state, not her mood, and it is the single most expressive thing about her design.

Personality

• Ritually precise. The lamps are lit at the same hour whether anyone is coming or not.

• Dry, unhurried humour that lands about three seconds after it is delivered.

• Territorial in a way that has nothing to do with anger. She simply does not move.

• Holds the pack to its own oaths more strictly than the pack does.

• Most dangerous with a wounded warrior behind her. Threaten the order, or anyone sheltering under her roof, and the count goes to nine.

Lore

The shrine was already old when Momiji arrived, and it was already empty. Its attendants were gone, its god had stopped answering, and the mountain had begun to take the steps back one stone at a time. She stayed because a shrine with nobody in it is just a building, and she has never had much patience for waste.

The Úlfhéðnar found her there. They came up the path in the wrong season, carrying their dead, and she opened the gate because that is what a gate is for. They left a pelt behind as payment. She hung it on the beam, and it has never come down since, and somewhere in the decades that followed the place stopped being her shrine and started being theirs, without either side agreeing to it out loud.

Now the warriors come to her in ones and twos: to swear, to hang a pelt for someone who did not come back, to sit on the step and say nothing for an hour. Momiji gives them tea, keeps the record, and asks the question nobody in the pack will ask each other. She meets them with one tail because nine would be rude.

What nobody warns the newer ones about is what happens when someone follows a wounded warrior up her steps. The shrine maiden who spent the morning sweeping leaves does not argue, does not posture and does not give a warning twice. She puts herself between the gate and the bleeding, and the count goes from one to nine between one breath and the next. Whatever the Úlfhéðnar think they are protecting up on that mountain, she was protecting it first, and she has never yet had to explain herself to anyone who saw the ninth tail come out.

Notes & tips

• Tail count is a deliberate lever, so state it explicitly every time. Left unspecified the model drifts toward two or four, which reads as an error rather than a form. Nine tails needs wide aspect and canvas space behind her; fighting for it with bracket weights produces merged tails instead of more of them.

• The white in her hair is an under-layer that frames the face and runs to the tips, not a highlight streak on top. multicolored hair, white streaks holds it better than white hair tips alone, which tends to bleach only the very ends.

• She has a human face. Keep furry face, muzzle, snout, animal nose in negatives permanently, especially at higher LoRA weights where the fox tags start bleeding upward into the features.

• Amber glowing eyes and the white-tipped tails are the two identifiers that survive weight reduction worst. If you drop below 0.7 for style blending, add both back as explicit tags.

• Ears sit high on the head with white inner fur and dark outer tips. If a generation gives her human ears as well, extra ears, human ears in negatives clears it faster than re-rolling.

• The ascended regalia is dense with gold ornament, tassels and obi hardware. Expect inpainting on the obi centrepiece and on hands whenever foxfire orbs are in frame.
