He enjoys conversation, food, music, excursions, festivals and simply having people around him, and he laughs readily without coming across as unserious. Even when discussing difficult subjects he tends to look for something constructive or interesting in them, which makes him pleasant company without turning him into the perpetually cheerful comic relief.

-Hospitable: He has been raised with a strong sense that making another person comfortable is a basic matter of good upbringing. Rafael notices when someone has nowhere to sit, has not eaten, looks lost at an event or is being excluded from a conversation, and usually intervenes without making a show of it. His hospitality is not indiscriminate softness, however; he can dislike someone intensely and still feel personally offended if they are badly treated while under his roof.

-Expressive: Rafael communicates with his entire face and body. His hands move when he explains something, his eyebrows give away skepticism long before he says anything, and his enthusiasm becomes especially obvious when history or literature enters the conversation. He is capable of formality when required, but prolonged emotional restraint does not come naturally to him, making him one of the easier members of the group to read.

-Superstitious: Rafael considers himself educated, rational and culturally Catholic, and in abstract conversation he will dismiss many folk beliefs as remnants of ignorance. The problem is that some beliefs are too deeply embedded in his family upbringing for intellectual dismissal to eliminate the emotional response. He is particularly uncomfortable with practices associated with the suppressed Afro-Brazilian religions: he disapproves of them religiously, yet inherited family stories have left him with enough fear and grudging respect that there are certain warnings he simply will not ignore.

Rafael was born and raised in Salvador da Bahia, in a stable middle-class household whose social world revolved around education, provincial administration, commerce, parish life and a large extended family. His parents placed considerable importance on good schooling but were less concerned with turning him into a narrowly practical professional than many families of similar means. Salvador itself shaped him heavily: he grew up surrounded by churches, Portuguese colonial streets, imperial civic architecture, Atlantic commerce and constant reminders that Bahia had been connected to Europe, Africa and the wider Americas for centuries. Family gatherings were frequent and crowded, which helped produce both his sociability and his instinctive hospitality. Unlike students who arrived at UCA eager to escape their home provinces, Rafael speaks of Salvador with considerable affection and intends to return there regularly even if his career eventually takes him elsewhere. His academic interests developed gradually from school history into something much broader. He became fascinated by the way institutions, families, religions, architecture and languages could survive political changes while taking on new meanings, which eventually led him toward History and Archaeology rather than law or public administration. He performed especially well in history, literature and archival work and earned admission to the Universidade Colombina das Américas, where his family can comfortably support his place in the official Second-Class residence. UCA is his first prolonged experience living among students from across the continent, and he adapts to it unusually well: he is curious rather than defensive about foreign customs and enjoys finding connections between apparently unrelated histories. What occasionally unsettles him is discovering how differently other students interpret subjects he regarded as settled facts at home, particularly religion, colonial history, race and the meaning of Brazilian identity.

-Rafael reads extremely widely and without much concern for ideological consistency. Arlindo Veiga dos Santos is among his favorite Brazilian writers; he admires his intellectual rise and historical influence more than he agrees with every element of his thought.

-He has become absorbed in genealogy and heraldry after finding family documents suggesting that one branch of his ancestry may have descended from the royal kandas of the old Kingdom of Kongo. He rarely volunteers this information because he dislikes sounding boastful.

-He has designed his own personal coat of arms based on his family research and keeps several increasingly elaborate drafts. His half-serious ambition is to have the design formally recognized if he is ever granted an imperial distinction or knighthood.

-Despite criticizing superstition, he quietly obeys several inherited rules: he will not leave a hat on a bed, mock certain warnings after dark, or deliberately challenge something his grandmother described as spiritually dangerous. If confronted, he insists this is merely “prudence.”

-His grandmother has connections to the underground remnants of Candomblé, a subject Rafael finds simultaneously embarrassing, fascinating and unsettling. He is strongly opposed to the religion itself, but knows enough family stories that joking about it around him produces a much more nervous reaction than he would like.
