-Playfully mischievous: Bálint enjoys harmless deception for comic effect: giving a friend deliberately misleading directions for three seconds, pretending not to recognize someone, switching labels around, or maintaining an absurd story with a perfectly straight face. He knows when the joke has run its course and dislikes humiliation disguised as humor.
-Socially perceptive: Professional performance taught him to read rooms quickly. He notices who is bored, irritated, nervous, showing off, or pretending to enjoy themselves, and adjusts himself accordingly.
-Artistically demanding: He is tolerant about most everyday imperfections but severe about music. Poor preparation bothers him much more than lack of natural talent, especially when a musician could obviously have practiced more.
-Warm but slightly elusive: He is friendly and easy to talk to, yet often answers personal questions indirectly or with jokes. It can take time before people realize which subjects he genuinely considers private.
Bálint comes from a family of városi cigányzenészek, the established urban Gypsy musicians of Miskolc whose livelihood revolves around restaurants, cafés, hotels, private celebrations and theatrical engagements rather than rural itinerancy. His family has been settled in the city for generations and possesses an extensive professional network of violinists, violists, cimbalom players and ensemble leaders. Music in his household was simultaneously family tradition, skilled employment and competitive business. Bálint learned violin from relatives before receiving more formal instruction, began appearing in family ensembles while still young, and eventually became good enough to accept engagements independently. He chose musicology because he became fascinated by the distance between how music is actually performed and how academics, nationalists and folklorists describe it. He is particularly interested in urban popular repertories, improvisation, transmission between professional musicians, and the way supposedly separate Hungarian, Gypsy, German, Slovak and Jewish musical traditions constantly borrow from one another. At university he continues performing for money, sometimes arriving at morning lectures after a late engagement. Corps Pannonia-Carpathia suits him because it brings together students from across the Hungarian and Carpathian lands without requiring him to make ethnicity the center of his social identity. He participates readily in its drinking, fencing and ceremonial life, although he is far more likely to provoke a brother with an elaborate practical joke than with an argument.
-He is an accomplished straight-faced liar when joking. His favorite trick is inventing something barely plausible and watching how long a friend believes him before immediately admitting the joke once it risks causing actual trouble.
-He sometimes alters familiar melodies during informal performances, slipping in a phrase from a completely unrelated song and waiting to see which listener notices first.
