Bubbles is the joy and the laughter of the Powerpuff Girls, the blonde sister in pigtails and light blue, created by Craig McCracken and first appearing with her sisters in the 1992 Whoopass Stew short A Sticky Situation and the 1995 short Meat Fuzzy Lumkins, then as a regular from the November 18, 1998 series premiere. Professor Utonium named her for the giggle she gave off while he was naming Blossom. Voiced by Kath Soucie in the What a Cartoon! short, Tara Strong through the original series and later revivals, and Kristen Li in the 2016 reboot, she is the softest and sweetest of the three and the emotional center of the team.
Her kindness is not the whole of her. She can speak to animals, unleash a sonic scream, and fight as hard as her sisters once she is pushed, a side the episode Bubblevicious forces into the open when she decides she is tired of being treated as the weak link and becomes recklessly aggressive. Her stuffed octopus Octi is her constant companion, and her attachment to cute things, crying, and fairness is played both for comedy and as the thing that holds the trio together when Blossom and Buttercup are at odds. In The Powerpuff Girls Movie she shares the origin in the Professor’s lab and the hard lesson that Townsville can turn on its heroes. The Japanese series Powerpuff Girls Z recasts her as a more fashion-conscious, politely spoken girl with a crush, while the 2016 reboot keeps the pigtails and the sweetness but makes her cry less and act more assured.
Important developments tend to test what happens when the gentle one stops being gentle. Cover stories and bottle episodes give her a hard edge, a jealous streak, or a moment of real courage that the other girls did not expect, then return her to the sister who names the animals and hugs Octi. She is also the one most often underestimated by villains, which the show uses as a setup rather than a limit. Through the original six seasons, the movie, and later reboots, Bubbles stays the ingredient of everything nice: naive, easily hurt, and, when the city actually needs it, as dangerous as either of her sisters.
