Dreams ↔ Nightmares is a bidirectional SDXL concept slider for changing not merely how a scene looks, but apparently how the world in the scene feels about existing.

Move toward Dreams and reality begins behaving suspiciously well.

Landscapes become luminous, fertile, expansive and impossibly inviting. Architecture grows cleaner, grander and stranger. Roads lead somewhere worth going. Flowers become monuments. Bells hang over impossible valleys. Cities discover utopia. The sky may acquire ambitions.

Move toward Nightmares and the same world remembers that nothing was ever promised.

Gardens wither. Buildings become oppressive. Forests acquire opinions. Empty places begin looking occupied. Cheerful gatherings may undergo regrettable changes in guest list. Oceans, libraries, theatres, cities and otherwise perfectly respectable landscapes can become hostile, ritualistic, ruined, predatory or simply wrong.

The fun part is that this is not just a brightness slider wearing a little black eyeliner.

Dreams ↔ Nightmares tends to reinterpret the semantic state of the whole scene: vegetation, weather, architecture, materials, cleanliness, openness, perceived safety, social atmosphere and even the apparent purpose of objects can shift together. A bell can stop being decoration and become a warning. A city can change from paradise to prison. A picnic can become… well. You’ll know.

The central subject often survives surprisingly well while the reality around it changes allegiance.

    Suggested range

    ±1 to ±2
Subtle to moderate influence. Good when you want the original scene to remain dominant while nudging its emotional logic.

    ±3
The sweet spot for strong transformations and showcase images. Usually enough to make the scene unmistakably dreamlike or nightmarish without completely surrendering the original concept.

    Beyond ±3
    Here be dreams.

    And other things.

Higher weights can push the model into increasingly stylized, archetypal interpretations: radiant utopias and candy-coloured impossible worlds in one direction; Gothic ruin, ritual spaces, dead landscapes and rather enthusiastic darkness in the other.

    What it works on

Landscapes, cities, architecture, interiors, forests, creatures, portraits, crowds, rituals, roads, gardens, water, surreal scenes and mundane scenes that really should have been left mundane.

It is especially entertaining on prompts containing something ordinary enough to reinterpret:

    A picnic in a meadow.

A woman floating in the ocean.

    A party in the woods.

    A creature in a child's closet.

A city at the edge of the world.

    You know. Normal things.

    Direction

    Positive → Dreams
Luminous, fertile, safe, idealized, celestial, colourful, playful, numinous, harmonious, surreal.

    Negative → Nightmares
Dark, depleted, ruined, threatening, barren, Gothic, oppressive, uncanny, ritualistic, predatory.

This slider was trained from opposing conceptual poles rather than a particular visual style, so the most interesting results happen when you give it something with enough semantic structure to reinterpret.

    Sometimes it changes the weather.

    Sometimes it changes the architecture.

Sometimes it changes what the scene appears to mean.

And occasionally it looks as though the model has been having dreams of its own.

    Sleep well.
