♫ "My hair's coal black, but my name's So White" ♫
So White is the star of the infamous Merrie Melodies cartoon Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (1943), directed by Bob Clampett. It is widely regarded as one of the finest animated shorts of Hollywood's Golden Age. A jazz-infused parody of Disney's Snow White, it features exceptionally expressive character animation, frenetic pacing, and a lively soundtrack performed by Black musicians. Despite its artistic acclaim its exaggerated racial caricatures led to its inclusion in Warner Bros.' infamous "Censored Eleven," a group of cartoons withdrawn from distribution in 1968. Although Warner has restored the film, it remains officially unavailable on home video or streaming. The short has been locked away in the studio vault, never to be released.
