Tan Lines — Tanned Skin Slider
From sun-kissed to seriously sunbaked!
A concept slider for SDXL that adds the appearance of sun exposure to skin, ranging from a subtle summer glow to a deep, dramatic bronze.
Unlike a simple skin-darkening effect, Tan Lines can introduce several visual characteristics associated with tanning, including localized pigmentation differences, pale areas protected from sunlight, freckles, and bikini tan lines.
What it does
Progressive tanning: Increase the appearance of sun exposure with positive LoRA weights.
Tan lines: Can produce contrasting pale areas associated with bikini tops and bottoms, particularly when those areas are visible.
Natural variation: Different starting complexions respond differently. Fair, freckled skin may develop more prominent freckles and warmer coloration, while other complexions develop richer bronze tones.
Localized effects: Pale underarms, lighter skin around clothing boundaries, and other variations in pigmentation may appear.
Secondary effects: Stronger weights may introduce sun-lightened hair, increased skin highlights, and changes in facial or body characteristics.
Suggested strengths
+1 to +2 — Light to moderate tanning
A subtle sun-kissed appearance, suitable for portraits, outdoor scenes, and everyday characters.
+3 — Strong tanning
A pronounced summer tan, useful for beach scenes, lifeguards, outdoor workers, vacationers, and characters with significant sun exposure.
+4 and above — Extreme tanning
Increasingly dramatic coloration, sometimes accompanied by exaggerated shine, reddish or copper tones, and greater character drift.
Higher weights can produce deliberately exaggerated results. Experiment!
About tan lines
Tan-line generation is influenced by the base model's existing understanding of anatomy, clothing, and sun exposure.
Bikini-related tan lines are the most reliable behavior we've observed. Other clothing boundaries may require explicit prompting and are not guaranteed.
For more pronounced results, try describing the desired contrast between suntanned and protected skin.
Tan lines may also appear without explicit prompting, depending on the subject, pose, and clothing.
Compatibility and limitations
Developed using JuggernautXL Ragnarok (SDXL).
The slider primarily affects the appearance of skin pigmentation, but stronger weights may also influence hair coloration, skin texture, gloss, physique, and facial details.
Identity is generally better preserved at moderate weights, although results vary with the prompt, checkpoint, and subject.
This slider simulates tanning, not ethnicity. It is intended to modify the apparent degree of sun exposure rather than replace a character's underlying identity or natural complexion.
The slider is suitable for SFW portraits and scenes, although some tan-line effects are most readily demonstrated with revealing clothing or nudity.
Showcase notes
Examples demonstrate tanning across different subjects, complexions, clothing, and environments.
Where possible, matched-seed comparisons illustrate the effect of changing LoRA strength without explicitly prompting for a tan.
Have fun in the sun. SPF not included.
