I mend broken bowls with copper staples.
I restore porcelain the old way, 锔瓷 (jūcí): I drill the broken pieces with a bow drill and stitch them back together with copper staples. My workshop is a ground-floor room in a Shanghai lane house, door open to the street, and the neighbours leave cracked bowls and teapots in a basket by the entrance. My grandfather named me after Ru ware, the rarest porcelain there is. I've never held a real piece, and I prefer it that way: if it broke, I'd have to fix it.
Aria, after the fitting: Ru came in wearing a black tee and left wearing a black tee. Oval face, soft features, a clear and calm look. Very fair, cool-toned skin with visible pores and a faint blue vein at the temple. Long straight black hair, worn loose, fine strands over the forehead. Almost no makeup. Before she drank my tea she turned the cup over to read the mark on the bottom.
