The Arco del Triunfo de San Juan de La Maguana (Triumphal Arch of San Juan de La Maguana) is a magnificent monument that stands unrivaled by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This majestic arch graces a circular plaza where the central and spacious Avenida Independencia intersects with Calle San Juan Bautista. Its architectural composition features two colossal pillars, symbolizing the material progress of the city. From its front, one can admire other iconic landmarks such as the Hotel Maguana, the Municipal Hall, the Palacio de Justicia, and Parque Duarte. Together, these elements form an integral part of San Juan de La Maguana’s identity.

The history of the Arco del Triunfo de San Juan dates back to President Rafael L. Trujillo’s visit to the Santomé Magazine headquarters in 1933. During that visit, he passed by a wooden arch erected at the intersection of Independencia and Colón streets. However, the dictator was neither the author nor the builder of this structure, which was completed in 1939. The credit for this construction goes to a group of notable citizens, including Isa Michelén, Víctor Manuel Montes de Oca (Nene), Lolito Piña Puello, Surín Valenzuela, José Vinicio Saladín, and Pedro J. Heyaime. They enlisted the services of Guillermo Prince, considered the father of construction in San Juan, and a master builder named Mendoza from La Vega. The latter employed masons and laborers provided by the district mayors from across the province.

The Arco del Triunfo now stands as a tourist attraction due to its historical significance and sculptural appeal. It graces postcards and television advertisements promoted by travel agencies and cultural enthusiasts. Tourist interest continues to grow, as people seek to explore the birthplace of President Medina, a statesman known for his prudence, frugality, and wisdom. Visitors also want to experience the warm hospitality of the friendly people of San Juan .
