Randoseru is such a cute word, actually it's borrowed from German "Ranzen", which is a backpack used by school children. There is an alternative explanation, based on the Dutch word "ransel" which has a similar meaning and stems from the same root word anyway, but given that Japan basically modelled it's modern schools on the Prussian school system, I'm quite sure it's "Ranzen" :-)
