Between 3000-1000 BC, a group of seafarers from what is now Taiwan began sailing out into the hemisphere sized Pacific Ocean to find and populate the tiny and sparce islands in it. Modern archeologists and historians can follow the path and peopling of the islands by following the minor changes in vocabulary and culture from island to island. It is thought that Fiji & Samoa were found first, followed by Tonga, the Cook Islands & Tahiti, Then Rapa Nui, Hawaii, and finally New Zealand or Aoteroa, theoretically making contact with South America as well.
In addition to vocabulary and culture, the clothing style of grass skirts, textiles and accessories made the jump from island to island. textile clothing was often light and worn as a wrap or loin cloth. As contact with western society grew, popular culture emphasized the aspects of pacific island beauties and a laid back tropical aesthetic, focusing on things like the coconut bra and grass skirt which were mostly worn for performances, further popularized with depictions of Hawaiian Hula and the hip shaking Tahitian Ote A.

In modern times, Native Pacific Islanders have begun to export clothing made by themselves. While Sarongs are found in many tropical cultures, this style has become extremely popular as vacation clothing for women. The Lei flower garlands have also become popular symbols of Polynesia, given as gifts of welcome and honor for rank.
