"Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world,

then it can only happen through music. " - Jimi Hendrix

JIMI HENDRIX = Iconic Musicians Series

    .

Jimi Hendrix (born: John Allen Hendrix, 27-11-1942 - died 18-09-1970),

was an American rock guitarist, singer, and composer who fused American

traditions of blues, jazz, rock, and soul with techniques of British

avant-garde rock to redefine the electric guitar in his own image.

He is widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians

of the 20th century, pioneering the explosive possibilities of the electric

guitar and how Rock-N-Roll music is played.

    .

Hendrix grew up playing guitar, imitating blues greats like Muddy Waters as

well as early rock-stars. He joined the army in 1959 and became a paratrooper

but was honorably discharged in 1961, after an injury that exempted him from

    duty in the Vietnam war.

He spent the early 1960s working as a freelance accompanist for a variety

of musicians, both famous and obscure. The self-taught guitar player was

unorthodox in style and penchant for playing at high volume. This limited him

to low paying jobs, until he was discovered by Linda Keith, the girlfriend

of Keith Richards and Chas Chandler (bass-player for the band The Animals),

in a small New York City club and brought to England in September of 1966.

Within 48 hours of arriving at Heathrow airport, Hendrix was jamming onstage

with the band CREAM and Eric Clapton.

While in England he stunned London’s club-land with his instrumental virtuosity

and extroverted showmanship. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who band

    were among his many admirers.

    .

Jimi had an encyclopedic knowledge of the musical roots on which the cutting

edge rock of his time was based, but, thanks to his years on the road with the

likes of Little Richard and the Isley Brothers, he also had hands-on experience

of the cultural and social worlds in which those roots had developed and a great

admiration for the work of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and the Yardbirds.

Speedily adapting the current musical and fashions of late 1966 London to his

own needs, he was soon able not only to match the likes of the Who at their own

high-volume, guitar-smashing game, but also to top them with what rapidly became

the hottest-ticket show in town ! Every where Jimi played, people´s jaws dropped

with amazement at his guitar playing skills.

    .

Though his active career as a featured artist lasted a mere four years,

Hendrix altered the course of popular music forever and became one of the

most successful and influential musicians of his era.

An instrumentalist who radically redefined the expressive potential and

sonic palette of the electric guitar, he was the composer of a classic

repertoire of songs, ranging from ferocious rocker-songs to delicate,

complex ballads. He also was the most charismatic in-concert performer of

    his generation.

    .

Hendrix’s work provides a continuing source of inspiration to successive

generations of musicians to whom he remains a touchstone for emotional

honesty, technological innovation, and an all-inclusive vision of cultural

    and social brotherhood.

    .

Other interesting facts about Jimi Hendrix ...

His nicknames were "The Bat" (because he slept all day), “the black Elvis”,

“The wild man from Borneo” and "Jimmy James".

    ...

The Secret To The Hendrix Sound - Jimi used 3 Super Lead Marshall 100-watt

amplifiers all played together with the volume and tone cranked to full.

This became known as the "Hendrix setting".

    ...

Purple Haze is a Love Song - Contrary to popular belief, Purple Haze is not

    about drugs. The clue is in the line from the song which says;

“ Am I happy or in misery? Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me ”.

    .

Hendrix couldn’t read music and learned to play every tune he played purely

by ear and listening to records.
