It's wild how Digimon switched their designs from cute talking animals, to sexy women in lingerie around the time their original audience became teen boys.
I agree! I really want a Youtube video breaking down the design decisions of Digimon compared to Pokemon.
In terms of cute vs sexy, I think Digimon always had a more serious design compared to Pokemon. Greymon is a much less cartoony design than Charizard. I'd wager Digimon tried to diversify its user base by making sexy designs so it had a chance to compete with Pokemon.
As another side note Digimon was an "Isekai" anime over a decade before the "Isekai" genre became popular.
@CitronLegacy true, they were the same concept but different executions. Even the overall atmosphere was different. Pokémon was very personal quest, while Digimon went for an epic with the fate of the world.
It was probably the games and merch that led Pokémon to win the mon fight. The Digimon games were famously disjointed. And I don't recall ever seeing alot of their merchandise back in the ancient days known as the 90s.
