It might not have used the Super FX chip Star Fox did, but Donkey Kong Country presented some of the first pre-rendered 3D graphics in a mainstream console video game. While you can generate a realistic FLUX representation of the visual style in seconds, a single 3D model rendering would take hours in a sweltering hot office for the dev team in 1993.

I think I've seen clips of that - it's honestly pretty crazy the stuff they were doing and managed to pull off with such limitations!
