This reminds me of an early scandal in the use of so-called image enhancement software in British courts. The prosecution was using a program from one particular company to enhance and identify perps from poor quality video. Turned out the method used involved feeding the suspects picture into the software (I kid you not) which then 'enhanced' the image on the basis of this photo.
