Created by writer William Messner-Loebs and artist Mike Deodato Jr., she made her debut in Wonder Woman (vol. 2) #90 in September 1994. Raised in poverty and trained rigorously in combat from childhood, Artemis emerged as the tribe's Shim'Tar, or champion warrior, embodying a pragmatic and aggressive ethos distinct from the Themysciran Amazons' ideals of peace and diplomacy.
A pivotal development occurred when Artemis entered and won a contested tournament to select a new Wonder Woman, defeating Diana Prince and briefly assuming the title with enhanced artifacts such as the Gauntlets of Atlas for increased strength and the Sandals of Hermes for flight and speed.
