One of the only anime that genuinely made me cry, if you haven't watched it i highly recommend it
I got the gist of it while training. I do plan to make time to actually watch it though.
@foxai143 that's great, i am telling you won't regret watching it. It will be an eye opening experience, i am telling you
@ninjahatoori8 Does it have an English Dub? BTW, try the anime movie 'A Silent Voice'. That one had me ballin.. Not like, in the way black people do, but like, I went through half a roll of toilet paper.. I mean, on tears.. It was sad AF..
@Lazman yes "tokyo magnitude 8.0" has an excellent english dub but i much prefer sub because the emotions are conveyed better and are more intact, also i've watched almost every big anime movies so yes i've watched silent voice too, i didn't cry while watching it but i bawled my eyes out the next morning when i woke up, if you want to watch another great movie but not as sad i recommend you to watch "Your name", maybe you watched it but its so good, it will blow your mind. I've watched it probably over 10 times
@ninjahatoori8 I've never understood people preferring subs. I mean, unless they speak the native tongue. But then, if they did, they wouldn't need the subs either. Thing is, regardless of how emotions are conveyed, it's all gibberish to those that don't speak it. Then ya miss half the action/visuals from reading the bottom of the screen. I mean, even if you're a speed reader, unless ya got blew eyes, like, one blew left, one blew right, ya ain't lookin in two places at once.
"i didn't cry while watching it"
Like I said, I did. But to be fair, that one hit me on a more personal level. For a short time when I was around 13-14, I used to make fun of this girl in my group-home cuz the other kids did, and I just wanted to fit in. I found out a few years back, that a decade or so prior, she was shot in the face point-blank by her BF. To make matters worse, I actually developed a crush on her the day I found out she was leaving that group-home. Hard not to wonder if things may have been different if I'd been a better person..
'your name'
Hate to sound like a parrot, but, is that dubbed? on top of other reasons, I'm not the fastest reader, so I just can't stand havin to keep going back to read the screen. In general, it's just more practical to understand them the first time. Also, I don't typically go outta my way to watch sad stuff, but I may check out Tokyo Magnitude, no.. wait, upon internally deciphering the rarely-used word 'magnitude' it occurred to me, that I''m pretty sure I seen that one on Netflix. It was alright, but didn't hit me nearly as hard as the one I mentioned.
But in general, if it's dubbed and has a boy that plays a central role, I'll watch it. Cuz I find boy's more relatable than girls, and it's refreshing to watch stuff that's not needlessly sexed up for the sake of padding runtime. When children (especially boys, cuz they don't put them in for representation) are the central theme, the studio is forced to make something that's actually entertaining.
That said, I really liked that movie 'drifting home'. Neat, very imaginative. a refreshing watch, for sure.
@Lazman yes the movie "your name" is dubbed, its one of the biggest anime movie so of course it will get dubbed, even elon musk praised it for some reason lol, also imo sub is better because of many reasons that I don't have time to elaborate on main reasons among which is that you gotta wait for anime to get subbed and since i watch long running animes, i ain't waiting 2 years for my favorite anime to get dubbed but i guess i understand if you have trouble reading fast, i can see how that can be annoying rather than enjoyable, there is no helping that. Enjoy the movie
@ninjahatoori8 You said that you have to wait for the anime to get subbed, but I think you meant dubbed, That said, if that's what you meant, then on that point, I agree, I waited so long for them to finish dubbing the Naruto series, that I can't even specifically remember where I left off. But I kinda spoilered a big chunk of it(and part of the Baruto series intro) by playing through the full ninja storm 4 game several times over.
@Lazman naruto is what converted me to sub. I made it as far as the forest of death before dub ran out and i switched to sub. took a while to get used to it, but i enjoy sub now.
@foxai143 lmao for me it was dragonball and one piece i think where i ran out of dub episodes, hearing goku's japanese voice for the first time made me cringe so hard but after that i never looked back at dub, funny thing is that the guy who introduced me to anime still watches dub and never grew out of it, bro would literally wait 2 to 3 years just to watch anime in dub. I guess to each their own
@ninjahatoori8 I have to admit that dragonball is still the only anime I prefer dub in.
@foxai143 yeah i agree, when the DBZ/DBS dub clips pops up it holds up very well, if i ever rewatch it i am gomma rewatch it in dun
@foxai143 An acquired taste to be sure. I've gotten myself into it before, but in all honesty, I don't personally find it as enjoyable. even if I can keep up with the subs, I just find it passively annoying having to keep looking down at them while all the big, high speed ninja battles are taking place above the words(well, sometimes high speed, other times it takes a full episode for someone to take a breath, lol..).
@ninjahatoori8 "Grew out of it" It's not like, an immature, or child-like thing to prefer dubs. It's natural to prefer to listen to things in a language that you actually understand. If anything, those that prefer subs are more of an anomaly; at least, biologically speaking. When one thinks about it, if audio/video had been invented, and mainstreamed before written word, would we have ever bothered with written language?
Much of it has been phased out in the last 15 years or so. Libraries still exist, but most people go to them as a quiet place to sit at computers or use their devices. The bulk of those reading books are older people, or kids doing it for their school assignments. My point is though, that humans, like with most things, prefer the path of least resistance, and whatever uses the lowest amount of biological resources to process information IS the path of least resistance.
Because our energy is finite, as is our focus, but we make up for those limits by utilizing multiple sensory-receptors at the same time; like, watching video while taking in the audio dialog. When trained, taking in multiple forms of input through a single sensory-receptor becomes easier, nearly effortless for some. But, as proven in studies done by MIT, the human brain is not designed for multi-tasking. It can be done, but it's inefficient, and lacking in pragmatism.
But, I digress, in getting to the point that I was leading up to; text is a 2-3 step language. One must first see it(focus in on the letters/words/symbols), interpret it(attach that visual data(letters/words/symbols) to pre-existing neural connections that match the incoming data), then process it(reflect in real-time on the patterns formed by those letters/words/symbols, and their meaning in the given context, the audio can help a little with that part, but not really as much as when it is in your natural spoken language). Whereas audio spoken language is heard, interpreted, and processed on the fly.
PS: I could never get into DBZ at all, the large hulked up babymen were just too weird for me.. As for Onepiece, I didn't hate it, at least not at first. I found the characters to be mostly unique and enjoyable. But I never got into it years/decades ago, and by my personalized version of modern standards, I found certain repetitious tropes to be brainless and irritating to watch. Like when the two main male support characters spend so much time simping after the girl that treats them like trash, physically abuses them, and talks down to them, with zero repercussions for her toxic attitude and actions.
Now, I get that in the realm of anime, this is supposed to pass as some form of comedy, but face it, if the genders were reversed, no one would find it the least bit funny. Girl goes after the guys, wants to touch their ding-dongs, gets punched in the face and has her head stomped on. Yea.. That show would be cancelled faster than Roseanne Barr.
