Jessica Drew, known as Spider-Woman, first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #32 in February 1977, created by writer Archie Goodwin and artist Marie Severin. The character was introduced to secure Marvel's trademark on spider-themed heroes. Born to scientists Jonathan and Miriam Drew, Jessica was exposed to uranium radiation as a child while living near Mount Wundagore in Transia. To save her life, her father injected her with an experimental serum derived from irradiated spider blood and placed her in a genetic accelerator, causing her to age slowly over decades. Upon emerging as an adult, she possessed spider-like abilities but lacked social experience. Recruited and brainwashed by Hydra, she was trained as an assassin under the codename Arachne. She eventually rebelled after a mission targeting Nick Fury exposed Hydra's manipulations, leading her to adopt the Spider-Woman identity as she sought independence and purpose.
Spider-Woman possesses superhuman strength capable of lifting approximately seven tons, enhanced speed, agility, durability, and reflexes, along with the ability to adhere to walls. Her signature powers include bio-electric "venom blasts" discharged from her hands, which can stun or kill opponents, and the secretion of pheromones that can induce attraction, fear, or repulsion in others. She is immune to most toxins and radiation, and her costume enables gliding, though she has occasionally demonstrated limited flight. Trained extensively by Hydra and later mentors like Taskmaster, Jessica is a master martial artist, skilled spy, and accomplished private investigator. Following her debut, she starred in her own ongoing series from 1978 to 1983, spanning 50 issues, during which she operated as a bounty hunter and later a private detective in San Francisco, forming key alliances and battling foes such as Morgan le Fay and various Hydra agents.
Over the years, Jessica experienced significant developments, including periods of power loss and restoration, membership in teams like the Avengers and New Avengers, and participation in major events such as Spider-Verse and Spider-Geddon. A pivotal twist occurred during the 2008 Secret Invasion storyline, revealing that she had been replaced by the Skrull Queen Veranke, with the real Jessica imprisoned until rescued. Post-rescue, she served with S.W.O.R.D. and rejoined heroic efforts. In more recent arcs, she embraced motherhood after giving birth to her son Gerry, who inherited spider-related powers, while continuing to balance personal life with vigilantism, including confrontations involving family secrets, multiversal threats, and urban crime wars. These evolutions have positioned her as a resilient, independent hero within the Marvel Universe.
