William Faulkner (1897-1962) was one of the greatest novelists the United States has produced. Most of his work is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, based on the place where he spent most of his life, and he is generally considered the greatest writer of Southern literature. (Ralph Ellison called him "the greatest artist the South has produced.")

Among his novels are The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Light in August, Absalom, Absalom!, and Go Down, Moses. In need of money, he worked as a script doctor in Hollywood, writing classics such as To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep. Along with winning two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Book Awards, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949, the fourth American to do so.
