It is one of the women’s court garments from the Heian period. Formally known as “Itsutsuginu Karaginumo,” the name “Juni-Hitoe” comes from the way the garments are layered. Typically, 10 to 20 layers of robes are worn, with the colors representing the seasons. For example, pink like almond blossoms in spring or red like maple leaves in autumn, with colors inspired by nature. The total weight can reach several dozen pounds, making it a workout in itself.
