    About the Artist

Viktor Alexandrovich Lyapkalo (born 18 September 1956, Ukhta, Komi ASSR) is a Russian and Soviet painter, member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists, living and working in Saint Petersburg.

    • 1978 — graduated from the Saratov Art School

    • 1979–1987 — Faculty of Painting, Repin Institute (Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts), students of Vladimir Gorb and Viktor Reichet; diploma work White Night

    • Member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists since 1990

    • Works held in museums and private collections in Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the USA

    • Core genres: (nu) and landscape, elevated into philosophical allegory

Heir to the Leningrad School of painting, Lyapkalo pushes academic realism into visionary territory — his work is often placed in the lineage of Sabin Balasa, Odd Nerdrum and Mahmoud Farshchian.

    The Manner

    • Old-master technique: multilayer glazing, invisible brushwork, polished luminous surface; form modeled by light, not line

    • Amber-bronze palette: ochre, burnt sienna, honey, cream, burgundy; deep umber shadows

    • Light as metaphysics: candle flame, sunset glow, window light; skin and brass rendered as if lit from within

    • Allegorical vocabulary: candle, mirror, scales, hourglass, dove, samovar — vanitas and choice motifs

    • Russian genre as parable: banya, tea ceremony, family interiors, winter windows — domestic scenes turned into quiet symbolism

    • Dreamlike spaces: figures floating among clouds, books and symbols; surreal yet academically grounded

    • Sensual but contemplative: the as philosophy, never vulgar; the gaze turned inward, not at the viewer
