Nkondi are a type of nkisi statuette made by the Kongo people. They are meant to be inhabited by aggressive spirits that can leave the statue to hunt down and harm evildoers and enemies. Some historians believe the nails hammered into nkondi may have been in part inspired by crucifixes brought to Africa by Portuguese missionaries.
