This massive plants grow from a subterranean tuber.
Mature female flowers are usually receptive for only one day. In many species, the inflorescences give off a rotting flesh smell to attract insects.
A member of this species, A. konjac, known as Devil's Tongue, is used for food.
It is obtained by neutralizing calcium oxalate contained in tubers with an aqueous calcium hydroxide solution.
